One of the most controversial figures of the last millennium, Martin Luther stands as an obstinately venerated figure in the general popular imagination as the "founder" and moral face of the Protestant revolution. However, even many Protestants (including Lutherans!) do not understand his life very well. Far from being a work of Catholic triumphalism, The Facts about Luther is an entirely objective, factual account of his life and work—based on Protestant historians. Written by Monsignor Patrick O'Hare, LL.D., this work furnishes evidence about Luther that is rather contrary to the popular image.

Catholics do not need to be overly assertive or aggressive in their treatment of Luther as a historical figure—the facts speak for themselves. And Monsignor O'Hare provides a balanced and factual, while yet authentically Catholic and thus critical, account of the former monk and priest's life. If nothing else, The Facts about Luther will at least provide all observers, whether Catholic, Protestant, or neither, a thorough and truthful account of the momentous and ultimately tragic figure of Martin Luther.

    Facts About Luther

Posted by Sr. Marie Augustine SSVC on Dec 30th 2024

I first read this book 20+ years ago and have often recommended it to Catholics and non Catholics alike. There’s so much misinformation written about him in the last fifty years; must if it is nothing more than emotionalism. It seems the non Catholic authors omit, stretch, and fabricate much of what they write, seemingly to immortalize and canonize perhaps the greatest heretic in the second millennia. The Facts About Luther us just that. Factual. It isn’t politically correct and there’s no sugar coating whatsoever. If you aren’t a lover of truth, don’t read this book. If you choose to read it, remember St Augustine’s wirds: “…you MUST be prepared to go where the truth takes you.” Luther will no longer be your hero. You may even convert to the Truth.

    A must read

Growing up Protestant and a convert to Catholicism this book put so many things together for me. I felt tugged towards Catholicism well before I realized it and had realized/led by Holy Spirit that something was wrong in all our denominations and each changing their view of whats right. Especially in most recent times¶ This book puts it into understanding how and why. I would encourage this to be read and shared. Pray whom you should share this book with. I will be!
