What is the truth? More than any other subject, apologetics—on behalf of the one, true Faith—gets to the heart of that matter. While other academic subjects are abstract, apologetics gets down to the reality that truth asserts a normative exigence on the one who apprehends it: it is incumbent upon recognizing the truth of the Faith of Christ to accept it and adhere to it. That is why it is so important for Catholics to gain a thorough and comprehensive understanding of their Faith and how to defend it.

Originally published in 1954, College Apologetics: Proof of the Truth of the Catholic Faith provides just that needed understanding, a fact that has made it a mainstay for high-level apologetic instruction for decades. Written for the college student, this text covers all aspects of the Faith and its defense in a classical, logical, and coherent fashion. Author Fr. Anthony Alexander lays out the Church's argumentation in clear, concise, and precise language for handy mastery by all serious students of the truth. Included are airtight arguments for:

  • God's existence
  • the soul's immortality
  • religion's necessity
  • the Gospels' reliability
  • the Church's nature
  • and far more . . .

Equip yourself to demonstrate in logical and irrefutable terms the genius of the Catholic Faith. There is an answer to "What is the truth?"; College Apologetics lays it out in clear terms.

This book is a masterpiece of apologetics

College Apologetics by Father Anthony Alexander is a masterpiece of Catholic apologetics. It is clear, concise and provides compelling logic that proves the tenets of the Catholic faith. This book provides several profound insights. To have faith in God – to have trust in God – one would need to believe that God is all-mighty, all-knowing and all-powerful. Father Alexander points out that God “neither deceives nor can be deceived” and that means God is honest and trustworthy. And that is a sound basis for faith in God. And it is true. God is man’s supreme goal in life, so knowing, loving and serving God is the purpose of life. Here’s a quote: “A better definition is that religion is man’s recognition of the existence of God, and the worship of Him because of His excellence and sovereignty over all things. Religion may be described as the virtue that man practices when he makes God the goal of his life. There are several ways to prove that the practice of religion is not merely an optional matter as the indifferentists say but rather is of a strict obligation.” The supreme truth that man can know is that God exists. Intellectual values are better than material goods; the permanent is better than the temporary; and the universal is better than the particular. Reason proves the fittingness and necessity of faith. Faith without reason is a false religion. Reason without faith is atheism. Both false religions and atheism are absurd. The perfect does not change. God is perfect, and God is Truth Itself, Goodness Itself, and Beauty Itself, so Truth, Goodness and Beauty do not change. This is the reason why the timeless truths of Catholicism cannot change and have been preached since the time of Christ. Father Alexander points out how Catholic doctrine can grow without changing its principles, as follows: “The development of a doctrine does not work against its essential unity. A doctrine does not develop in the sense that a new meaning is added to it but in the sense that meaning that was always there is now unfolded. The truth itself does not grow but our understanding of it can and does grow. It is only reasonable then that this deeper understanding should be set down in more expressive terms.” Why is apologetics important? Why is God important? Because the way to happiness is to make God the goal of your life. Aquinas in his Summa Theologiae proved that God is the Greatest Good, which is the source of true, everlasting happiness. And that is a compelling reason to read this superb book.
