Margaret Clitherow was executed in York, England at age 33 for allowing Catholic priests to celebrate Mass in her home during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603). Her martyrdom was particularly cruel because she refused to plead to save her loved ones and the jurors from having to participate in a sham trial. Clitherow was canonized in 1970 as one of 40 Martyrs of England and Wales. Here is the story of her life, including her marriage and motherhood, and her devotion to the Eucharist and adherence to the Catholic Faith. This historical drama explains how the Catholic Faith was ultimately lost in England. However, this English tragedy gave the world many courageous examples of Catholic faith-unto-death, including the inspiring story of St. Margaret Clitherow, “the Pearl of York.”
