The stories in this book leave a lot of work for the reader. They are quick snapshots from saints’ lives, told from the point of view of someone who was or may have been there other than the Saint. Because of this removal from the actual saint’s feelings and perspective, I feel the impact of the saint’s devotion to Jesus Is lessened for the reader. It leaves the reader, like the point-of-view character, curious about this thing outside of themselves, rather than assured or inspired. Because they are quick snapshots, there is work to be done on the reader’s part to quickly orient themselves to what is going on and what is being talked about before the short story ends. I can see the author or editor wanted to move away from the paragraph overview typical of Saint life writing, but I feel this take missed the mark. I’m grateful to have a list of saints devoted to the Eucharist in special ways from this book, but I think I’ll have to do the storytelling part myself to make it impactful for my kids.
