The Catholic American Bible Is Coming.
Is Your Parish Ready?

On February 10, 2027, the Catholic American Bible (CAB) will become the official English-language Bible for Catholics in the United States—the most significant revision of Catholic Scripture in more than a decade. Approved by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), the CAB will replace the New American Bible, Revised Edition (NABRE) as the official translation for Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours throughout the United States. For the first time, the CAB unites what Catholics hear at Mass with what they read at home.

CAB vs NABRE...

The CAB includes a completely revised New Testament translated with greater fidelity to the original Greek and in full accordance with the Vatican's Liturgiam Authenticam guidelines. It also features an updated Old Testament with revised introductions and study notes, and replaces the NABRE Psalms with the Abbey Psalms and Canticles. Key Greek/Hebrew terms are now translated consistently throughout the bible. Example: 'kardia' (heart) is always 'heart,' not sometimes 'mind' or 'soul.'

The NABRE Is Being Replaced...

The CAB is replacing the NABRE as the official English Catholic Bible in the United States. This transition has been mandated by the U.S. bishops, and the NABRE will be phased out by 2028. The change establishes one unified biblical text for Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, and personal reading, providing greater consistency, accuracy, and fidelity across Catholic life..

Impact It Will Have...

The CAB creates a unified experience of Scripture by matching what Catholics hear at Mass with what they read at home. Its greater accuracy and consistency make it easier for parishioners to follow the liturgy, deepen their understanding of Scripture, and engage more fully in Bible study. The inclusion of the Abbey Psalms and Canticles also brings a rich tradition of prayerful Scripture to every parish and home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is The Catholic American Bible

In June 2012, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB),announced plans to develop a new unifrom Bible for catechesis, study, and liturgical use in the United States.

At present, different texts are used across Catholic life: the Lectionary for Mass is based on the New American Bible (NAB), the Liturgy of the Hours uses the NAB for most readings and canticles, and the New American Bible, Revised Edition (NABRE) is approved for private prayer and study.

CAB will replace these multiple versions with one unified Scripture text approved for Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, and personal use. It will begin appearing in print on Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2027.

With the CAB, Catholics in the United States will hear, pray, and study from the same Bible across all aspects of parish and personal life.

The Catholic American Bible (CAB) builds upon the New American Bible, Revised Edition (NABRE), first published in 2011.

The CAB includes:

  • A modified version of the Old Testament from the NABRE
  • The Abbey Psalms and Canticles as the source for the Book of Psalms
  • A newly revised New Testament
  • Updated introductions and notes
  • Appendices including the Abbey Psalms and Canticles

Together, these elements form a single text approved for liturgical and devotional use in the United States.

TAN will be offering 8 unique formats of the CAB:

  • First Holy Communion
  • Black Leatherette
  • Large Print
  • Paperback
  • Blue Leatherette
  • Hardcover
  • Jornaling Bible
  • Pocket Zipper

Sneak peaks of these edditions are show cased above.

Parishes should begin planning their transition now. The CAB launches in 2027, with full implementation expected by 2028. By that time, all non-CAB Bibles are to be replaced, as the CAB becomes the standard Scripture text used across Catholic life in the United States. Churches, schools, and ministries are encouraged to begin phasing out NABRE-based resources and prepare for the unified text used in Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, and parish formation.
