And there is no better way to do so than by delving into Saint Ignatius’s classic Spiritual Exercises, which started the modern retreat movement and played a pivotal role in the conversions of many saints to a radical following of Christ. This book is one of very few that can truly be said to have changed the world. Now, let it change you!

This beautiful deluxe edition has been edited for the modern reader by Father Sean Salai, S.J., and contains a new preface to help orient readers to this timeless classic.

Arranged as a DIY retreat, it is an essential part of developing a fruitful and consistent interior life, a soldier-saint's battle plan for spiritual warfare.

Peppered with quotes from Jesuit saints and spiritual masters, this new deluxe edition of the Spiritual Exercises brings St. Ignatius’s powerful spirituality to a new generation of Christians striving to become saints themselves.

Great Edition for Laymen and Directors

This edition is fantastic. Before buying, you should be aware that this is not a modern synthesis designed to be "St. Ignatius-lite" and readable by anyone, but is rather a modern presentation of a traditional translation, with some helpful additions and editorial decisions. The editor notes that, if you think you will just casually pick this up and guide yourself on a retreat, you are sorely mistaken. The exercises were originally conceived as a sort of instructional guide for discernment/retreat masters to use, and the editor tries to preserve this while still making it more accessible to the modern layperson. The translation is based on a traditional one that is less 'literal' and more 'dynamic,' but is one that is very faithful to the text. Not only has the editor included points for prayer from Spiritual Masters, but he has also inserted helpful addenda (always denoted in italics) to explain things St. Ignatius meant (for example: when he says "powers of the soul," an inline note that mentions 'understanding, will, etc.'). Also, the editor re-includes text that had been omitted in the traditional 19th century translation for being too difficult or seen as not relevant by summarizing the content, again in italics, while still respecting the traditional translation. It also updates mistakes made in the original translation such as incorrect Scripture citations and reformats the book into sections which the original Spanish version had (which the 19th century versions do not have). The editor also gives some general instructions on how to use the book in the preface, and helpfully inserts the "Points for personal prayer" from the Spiritual Masters as 'prelectionaries' before a section of the exercises to which they correspond. There are also optional reflection questions at the end of each section. The book quality is excellent, and the book has a ribbon to hold your place. If you are looking for an edition that presents the Saint as he was, with some modern additions that respect the density of the original work, I think you will like this edition. I am looking forward to having this help me in my prayer life.
