“Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, 'Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.'” (Luke 1:34-35).

The beautiful and spiritually enriching practice of devotion to the Sorrowful Mother will be illuminated for you in this powerfully written, pocket-sized booklet.

Although many Catholics today have forgotten about the great sorrows of Our Lady, her role as sorrowing mother grows ever more important with the increasing evils of the modern world. This booklet explains more about Our Lady’s sorrows than most Catholics will ever know. It shows you that being devoted to Mary is to grow in love for her and to obtain many special blessings for ourselves in this life and in the next—particularly, the graces that will be bestowed at the hour of our death, as we pray in the Hail Mary every day.

Based on Sacred Scripture, Holy Tradition, and the writings of the saints, this booklet outlines the four special favors promised to those who meditate on Our Lady’s tears and sorrows. Included to enrich your prayer life and deepen your devotion are many relevant prayers:

  • The Stabat Mater
  • The Litany of the Sorrowful Mother
  • Seven prayers for the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin
  • And many more!

As you will read in the pages of this booklet, “Mary leaves nothing unrewarded that is done in her honor.” With this knowledge, you will be able to turn confidently to the Sorrowful Mother, weeping with her over the many sins of the world and the suffering of Our Lord. With this booklet in hand, you will continue to grow in love of the Sorrowful Mother and receive the many graces due to those who mourn with her and comfort her.

“Stabat Mater dolorosa

Iuxta crucem lacrimosa

Dum pendebat Filius.”

“At the Cross her Station keeping,

Stood the mournful Mother weeping,

Close to Jesus to the last.”

    Devotion to the Sorrowful Mother

Posted by Michele Costello on Sep 12th 2023

As a gift to Our Lady, the Blessed Virgin Mary for her birthday, I purchased 100 copies of this booklet that I have prayed for many years. I plan to distribute them for the Memorial of the Sorrowful Mother. But what I realized is that what I have done, over the years, is to memorize scriptural passages for each of the Seven Sorrows. I recite these to myself before reading the passage that acompanies each image. It started when I prayed this devotion with my Bible. This practice greatly enhances the meaningfullness of this devotion. I mention this because I believe that the time has come to revise this booklet to include the bible passages. I even noticed that the actual devotion does not even begin until two pages after the center staples of the booklet. This caused me to place one of those tiny colored arrows in each booklet to show where the devotion begins. The Fathers of Vatican II wanted all the faithful to grow closer to the Lord through Sacred Scripture. This ancient devotion, so very worthy of attention, would be brought up- to-date and TAN Books would be "thinking with the Church" were such a revision to be undertaken. It really is quite rewarding to memorize whole passages of Sacred Scripture while meditating on Our Blessed Mother's suffering. To conclude with a little story: Because I knew the entire Bible passage about the Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple, I was able to recite it to a youth one day to show that just because there is misunderstanding in a family that that is not indicative if sinfullness - as it happened in the all Holy Family. That revelation earned me a smile! Thank you very much.

    Thorough treatment

I especially enjoyed the prayers, novenas and insights of the Saints for this devotion. Our blessed Mother walks with each of us in our own sorrows, but reminds us of the joy that her Son promises.
